Marcela Colombres, Ph.D.

Marcela Colombres studied Biochemistry at the Pontificia Universidad Católica de Chile with a Minor in Fundamental Physics. She completed her doctorate degree in Biological Sciences with a Mention in Cellular and Molecular Biology at the same university, focusing in the area of Mollecular Neurobiology and graduating with the highest honors. She has been an author of various scientific publications and chapters in science books. She has participated actively in national and international scientific congresses. She has written and taught courses in educational and undergraduate science programs.
Sebastián Bernales, Ph.D.

Sebastián obtained his Bachelor’s degree in Sciences and Biochemistry at the Pontificia Universidad Católica, Chile. Then he completed his doctorate degree in Celullar Biology at the University of San Francisco, California. Currently, at the Fundación Ciencia & Vida, he directs the research operations of the North American company Medivation Inc. in Chile in order to develop new therapies against various human illnesses, including prostate cancer.

Adjunct Professor and Head of the Centro de Genómica y Bioinformática, Pontificia Universidad Católica de Chile. Member of the Consejo de Innovación Nacional para la Competitividad. Board member of Fundación Chile. Expert in quality assurance, regulatory affairs and intellectual property in biotechnology. Former Vice President of Chiron Corporation, a California-based biotechnology company.
Pablo Valenzuela, Ph.D.

Cofounder and Director of Fundación Ciencia para la Vida, President of BIOS Chile IGSA, Professor of the Pontificia Universidad Católica de Chile and of the Universidad Andrés Bello, Head of the Instituto Milenio de Biología Fundamental y Aplicada (MIFAB). Board member of several biotechnology companies in USA. Expert in the molecular biology of infectious diseases, vaccines and all aspects of biotechnological product development. Founder and former Senior Vice President of Research and Development, Chiron Corporation, California. National Award in Applied and Technological Sciences, 2002.
President of Fundación EcoScience
Eduardo Ergas is an entrepreneur with extensive experience in the financial sector, particularly in banks and topics related to entrepreneurship and venture capital funds. He belongs and has belonged to various business directories in Chile and the USA, among others. He created a venture capital fund for seed capital investments in the Silicon Valley, USA. Between 1998 and 2001, Mr. Ergas was the president of Endeavor Chile, a nonprofit foundation dedicated to promoting entrepreneurship, and belonged to the World Endeavor council in Boston. Then, he was a member of the “Consejo de la Corporación de Fomento de la Producción” (Council of the Corporation for Production Development) in Chile, and he was one of the directors of CORFO.
Eduardo Ergas visited Silicon Valley in 2000 with his wife and children. This trip confirmed his fascination with the work of scientists, as he found that he had much in common with them. So, he returned to Chile in order to start initiatives related to science. In 2004, Ergas started the Fundación EcoScience Chile hoping to create a connection between the scientific world and the rest of the non-scientific society. This foundation hopes to rescue the cultural, environmental, and scientific heritage of Chile.
